Grief Support with Cremations

October 30, 2017 • Teri Vila-Caballero

Losing a loved one is a huge, life-changing event. It is often one of the most significant things a person can go through, especially when they are close to the person who passes away. Many people feel that a traditional burial is a good way to get closure on the situation. But cremations are becoming more and more popular today. If you are in charge of your loved one’s services, you might wonder if cremations are the right option. They are certainly the economical way to go, but will they give your family the closure it needs? There are plenty of grief support options that can go along with cremations. Here are a few to consider in Miami, FL.

-Visitation

When you choose direct cremations, your loved one is cremated right away. But that is not the only option. Instead, you could have a visitation first with an open or closed casket. This allows your family to spend time with your loved one and say goodbye before the cremations take place. Then, after this time of mourning together, cremations are carried out and you can dispense of the ashes with another service as you see fit.

-Scattering Ashes

If you don’t feel the need for a visitation or casket, sometimes it helps a family to gather together in a small, intimate group, and say goodbye to the loved one with a memorial service that includes scattering their ashes. You might go to a park they enjoyed, plant the ashes around a new tree, or toss them out into the water. This can also give you the finality you need to move on with your life without them, however hard that will be.

-Remembering the Deceased

Grief comes and goes in waves and has many stages. If you decide to go with cremations, that doesn’t mean you are simply going to forget about your loved one. You can get a lot of grief support in gathering with others and remembering your loved one. Tell stories about them and look through old photo albums. This kind of support with other people who knew them can give you what you need.

-Burial Service

Even if you go with cremations, you don’t have to forego the burial service. You can get a small plot for your loved one and bury the urn with the ashes in them instead of a full casket. Watching the urn placed into the ground and tossing dirt on top of it can also help you let go and say goodbye.
